Construction Defect Specialist

About the Position

Alan Gray LLC is a rapidly expanding international insurance and financial services firm headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. We are looking for a strong Construction Defect Specialist for a temporary assignment. You will be responsible for a complex caseload, where determining coverage, composing disclaimers, and reservation of rights letters will be required. You must have in-depth knowledge of risk transfer and apportionment, and the ability to “think outside of the box” to create results in the company’s best financial interests. Reporting to upper management will be required while setting proper reserves on cases.

Qualifications

  • Prior related work experience required in construction defect claims handling.
  • The ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment to manage a caseload with only limited oversight by a manager (generally ten or more years).
  • At least 5 years of insurance claims handling the experience.
  • Good organizational skills and a disciplined, self-motivated personality.
  • Proficient in interpersonal, negotiation, presentation and professional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Solid computer skills including proficiency in the use of Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Responsibilities

  • Direct handling of Construction Defect and General Liability claims of varying severity from receipt to final resolution.
  • Perform coverage analyses and draft coverage position letters consistent with those analyses.
  • Working to promote the company’s technical claims expertise and profile in the marketplace.
  • Comply with all legal and regulatory requirements, including licensing requirements.
  • Investigate, evaluate and settle claims, applying technical knowledge and people skills to effect fair and prompt claim resolution.
  • Complete detailed reviews of claims related issues, including coverage, liability and damages and, document the claim files appropriately.
  • Set and maintain appropriate and timely indemnity and expense reserves.
  • Must have good business acumen (i.e. understand how an insurance company works and makes money, including how this role impacts both the company and our customers’ ability to be profitable).
